Peter was born with Down Syndrome and is unable to talk, so he uses his art to communicate.
At his Art Extravaganza at the Cup From Above cafe, Aspley, Peterspoke about his love of painting and how it had enabled him to help others.
“I love the freedom painting gives me to express myself. I am so very happy when I am painting and when I am in the studio.
“This art show will tell people that we (people with disabilities) are capable of doing anything that we are helped with,” Peter said.
Peter uses Facilitated Communication, a strategy that allows him to communicate by pointing to letters on a keyboard.
Being able to communicate opened up a whole new world of personal and creative expression to Peter.
“Learning to communicate saved my life and I have been very passionate about getting my message out there ever since,” Peter said.
Minister for Communities, Child Safety & Disability Services and state member for Aspley, Tracy Davis said it was enormously humbling to be asked to be minister for disabilities, and that people with disabilities had the same aspirations as everyone else, it was just more of a challenge for them.
“Artwork created by people with disabilities and mental illness is art in it’s purest form, driven by the desire to express themselves. It is artwork from the heart,” she said.
