We assist people in acute crisis situations such as pregnant women facing homelessness. The aim here is to provide the immediate resources necessary to keep them safe. For example in this instance it looks like dropping off hampers of non perishable food items.
We’ve been able to support dozens of women in extreme DV situations by giving them furniture, food hampers and someone to simply support them through the crisis. We were able to support one lady who was homeless (sleeping rough) and also pregnant. She came in late one friday afternoon and it was raining. The Cafe Chaplain was able to organise crisis accommodation and drop her there so she had a safe place to stay for the weekend. The chaplain also works alongside people who are exiting addiction and are volunteering at the cafe. The months following leaving addiction are turbulent and fragile. Consistent support through this period is necessary to increase the likelihood of their success.
All this comes at a cost. We receive no government funding so we’re totally reliant on members of the community to pay for our chaplains. You can purchase “time tokens” here. $30 pays for about 1 hour of their time to spend with these people in crisis (which is very cheap).
Our aim over the next year is to have a full time chaplain and another chaplain employed part time for 20 hours per week. The exact projected operating budget for the chaplaincy team for 2017 is $87,442
We would appreciate a weekly pledge and can roster our chaplains according to the collective generosity of the community.
CURRENT HOURS PLEDGED PER WEEK: 14.5 (Target 60)
The best way to pledge is to simply setup a regular direct debit through your internet banking into our account. Make sure you add the description “Chaplain” in the transfer details.
